Spectrum Plastics Group expands its own spectrum with micromolding buy

The plastics processor is adding six machines to its Minneapolis facility, as well as customers and a new employee, with an eye to hiring more as business takes off. The company already has rapid prototyping and injection molding capacity; adding micromolding will improve its odds in the medical, aerospace, defense and precision industrial markets that it serves.

The seller of the equipment, another processor, wants to remain anonymous, according to a spokesman for Spectrum. Spectrum Plastics Group was better known as Midwest Plastics from its founding in 1958; the company became Spectrum Plastics Group in 2007, and since then has added contract molding facilities in Connecticut and New York and a rapid prototyping shop in Colorado. Spectrum is headquartered in Minneapolis.

"Spectrum Plastics already is respected for its work in small-parts molding. Adding specialized micromolding capabilities is a perfect fit for our current customers and new markets as we pursue a very focused and aggressive growth strategy," commented Randy Ahlm, president and CEO of Spectrum Plastics Group, in a statement. He added, "The trend is toward using injection molded plastics in new applications as the material properties continue to improve, including additional metal-to-plastics conversions to the micro-scale parts used in implantable medical devices, and highly engineered aerospace, defense and industrial components. Increasing our ability to efficiently manufacture micro-sized products at Spectrum Plastics reflects our commitment to serve customers across the full product development lifecycle, no matter what size or materials are required."

Spectrum is majority owned by Spell Capital Partners (also Minneapolis). Spell also owns rotomolder Rotonics, colorant concentrate supplier Breen Color Concentrates, and thermoformer Pacific Production Technologies, as well as other manufacturers with direct or tangential links to plastics processing.
