Col. Mike Traxler has landed at Fort Belvoir, where Col. Stephanie Foster, Project Manager for Soldier Sensors and Lasers, presented him with a charter to serve as the Product Manager for Soldier Precision Targeting Devices. The ceremony was conducted at Belvoir on Aug. 26. PM SPTD develops and fields systems that accurately locate and designate targets for engagement with precision munitions. The laser designator systems provided by the organization allow aircraft and artillery using modern, "smart" munitions to hit targets with pinpoint accuracy. This capability has the added benefit of reducing incidences of collateral damage and civilian casualties. Traxler's diverse background has prepared him for his new assignment. After graduating from the University of Colorado in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, he received a regular Army commission as an ordnance officer. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division; and First Infantry Division, with deployments to Kosovo, Haiti and Iraq. He has also served within the Army's acquisition side. Assignments included Army Research Development and Engineering Command Science and Technology Adviser to U.S. Special Operations Command, Tampa, FL; assistant product manager for Improvised Explosive Devices; assistant product manager for the Intelligent Munition System, Project Manager for Close Combat Systems, Picatinny Arsenal, N.J.; Team Leader, AMC-FAST, XVIII Airborne Corps, Baghdad, Iraq; and Product Release Manager and Rapid Prototyping Officer, Armaments Research, Development and Engineering Center, Picatinny.
