Ministry to develop Rapid Prototyping Technology

The Industry and Commerce Ministry will develop Rapid Prototyping Technology in Sri Lanka. Ministry Secretary Thilak Collure who met officials said that the prototype machine at the Moratuwa University could generate low cost prototypes within a short period.

Small and medium scale entrepreneurs in the country could gain from the technology at the Moratuwa University at a low cost. Sri Lanka is the third country which uses Rapid Prototyping Technology. The Industry and Commerce Ministry with the support of the National Science Foundation and Moratuwa University established a Rapid Prototyping machine spending Rs 45 million.

The technology can be used to enhance the design and manufacturing capabilities in electrical, electronic, gem, jewellery, automobile, ceramic and medical industries in Sri Lanka.

Rapid prototyping is the automatic construction of physical objects using additive manufacturing technology.
