“How it works: 3-D printing” |
| Posted: 29 Oct 2010 09:39 AM PDT 3-D printing — also known as rapid prototyping — was first developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993. The first commercial printer hit the market in 1996, costing about $57,000. Now, printers start at around $15,000 and let designers create complex models overnight for a fraction of what they used to cost. Online printing services are also available for hobbyists who want to print their own 3-D creations. • For a further look at how 3-D printing works, click here. Copyright ©2010 Omaha World-Herald®.
